We’re kicking off 2020 by studying the elements of art shape, color, and balance.
Kindergarten and First graders have been looking at artwork by artist and author Faith Ringgold. She is famous for her painted quilts and Children’s storybooks. We are creating a cityscape collage inspired by her book, Tar Beach. Our collage will have geometric and free form shape buildings and a fabric border to mimic a quilt. Second and Third graders are learning about artist Romero Britto. Britto creates colorful, pattern filled paintings. He has collaborated with many businesses around the world who have featured his art, such as, Disney. Students are creating a Britto inspired artwork utilizing patterns in warm and cool color groups. Fourth and Fifth grade students are practicing the meditative art of Mandalas. Traditional mandalas are made from sand by Tibetan monks. These designs use radial symmetry, meaning they are symmetrical from any direction because they are a circular shape. Students are designing their own mandala using pencil, colored pencil, and marker while practicing calming their mind and body.
